Theatre (Acting/Performing Arts) has been an influential factor in many people’s lives. Creativity can flourish, academics can improve, and means of self-expression can be developed. One can benefit significantly, not only in terms of exploring the unexplored or hidden ability to act, but also by shedding the inhibitions associated with performing in front of an audience. Participating in theatre classes can stimulate student’s creativity and thought process. The whole experience of theatre makes people more aware and sensitive towards various issues.
Academic Performance: Numerous studies have demonstrated a correlation between drama involvement and academic achievement. In addition to having higher standardized test scores than their peers who do not experience the arts, those who participate in theatre often experience improved reading comprehension, maintain better records and stay generally more engaged in school than their non-arts counterparts.
Self-esteem: In addition to building social and communication skills overall, involvement in theatre and performance has been shown to improve one’s self-esteem as well as confidence in academic abilities.
Those who are highly involved in drama demonstrate an elevated self-concept over the ones who are not involved. Playwriting original works and dramatic presentation of existing works can help to build the self-esteem and communication skills of a person. The act of performing can help the individual recognize his/her potential for success and improve their confidence.
Empathy & Tolerance: Acting roles from different situations, time periods and cultures promotes compassion and tolerance for others.
Concentration: Playing, practicing and performing develop a sustained focus of mind, body and voice which helps with other areas of life including academics.
Communication Skills: Theatre enhances verbal and nonverbal expression of ideas. It improves voice projection, articulation, fluency of language and persuasive speech.
Problem Solving: Those who learn to communicate the who, what, where, when and why to the audience. Improvisation fosters quick-thinking solutions, which leads to greater adaptability in life.
Builds Your Confidence: It takes a whole lot of self-belief & confidence to go on stage in front of hundreds, or even thousands of people and just perform. No matter how good you are. Performing arts gives one opportunities to put oneself in that situation and, more importantly, to pull through them and this can greatly improve self-esteem.
Social Awareness and Aesthetic Appreciation: Legends, myths, poems, stories and plays used in drama teach students about social issues and conflicts from cultures past, present, all over the world. Participating in the theatre raises appreciation for the art form.
Adapt to Challenges & Situations: To be successful in life adaptability and flexibility is of paramount importance. Theatre facilitates one to explore more, face new challenges and have the ability to adapt with the changing situations.
