Recreation consists of activities or experiences carried on within leisure, usually chosen by own free will by the participant – either because of satisfaction, pleasure, creative values and social values to be gained from them.
Young adults, especially in higher education, spend most of their time with college friends and outside of home for different purposes or work. Therefore, in the recent scenario, the best place to include such activities in one’s life is one’s place of education rather than at home. This provides a chance to include recreations in one’s life and also helps students to socialize and become less dependent on one’s parents.
Various studies have shown the importance of leisure activities on one’s life specifically in three aspects – physical health, mental health and improving quality of life.
Physical Health: Activities, especially outdoor ones improve one’s health like maintaining lower body fat percentages, increasing muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance. Overall it increases one’s stamina and energy level resulting in more focus for academic activities.
Mental Health: Mental health is essential for overall physical health. Recreational activities help manage stress. It provides a chance to care & protect oneself and provides a sense of balance and self-esteem, which can directly reduce anxiety and depression and also helps in increased motivational levels.
Improved Quality of Life: People who make such activities as part of their regime are more likely to feel satisfied with their lives overall. Recreational activities help create a balance between academic pressures with physical and mental well-being. The effects are many folds; it enriches self-expression, self-fulfilment ability, increased awareness, social responsibility, interpersonal skills, techniques and methods of using leisure, physical strength and creative expression.

Camping
Young adults going out for a camping trip are not only fun for them, but have several benefits. Students have to be physically involved in setting the camp. This activity is done in teams, which will promote the team work effort in students.
Reading
Reading is still one of the most popular activities for young adults today. Many find that reading, while still an entertaining, learning and fun activity is more soothing when it comes to unwinding after studying.
Tree Plantation
This is a very useful activity for our environment and it will help to instil the importance and significance of trees in the young adults’ life. Each one should be asked to plant a tree and then ‘adopt’ it. They should water it every day, it takes not more than 5 minutes and student will have a sense of accomplishment once the plants start to grow.
Exercising
Do you jog, yoga or lift weights, if you do, it is great as exercising is another top choice in activities that young adults follow. We have become a lot more health conscious in recent years, leading to more people getting off the sofa and doing physical activities.
Listening to Music
While the tastes might differ music is nearly universal. It’s also something we can do almost anywhere, with music streaming services and phones capable of holding thousands of songs. Even if you can’t take a real break from studying, listening to music while doing the assignments can make it seem like less of a routine task.
Outdoor Sports
These activities though now famous both in boys and girls are a great source of exercise and have countless benefits. Young adults that participate in these sports are more organized and show leadership skills later in their life.
Indoor Games
These activities provide an opportunity to socialize with friends and other people whom you play with. Participating in indoor games helps in improving productivity, maintaining focus, encouraging creativity and having good body coordination.
Cooking Activities
Cooking activities are very fun, young adults learn and on regular basis prepare different dishes. This enhances fine motor skills, increases focus & attention, teaches life skills, promotes healthy eating and boosts self-confidence & a sense of achievement.
