Reading leads to success. When students read more than just their classroom assignments, research shows that they generally do well in school/college. Firstly, the extra reading expands their vocabularies. It also shows them how different writers put down their thoughts leading to better writing skills. Secondly, students who read more serious literary works gain skills in handling complex ideas. The more they read, the more information they pick up. This leads to a solid core of knowledge that is useful in a wide variety of classes.
Leisure reading can be referred to as reading any book, novel or magazines in your free time. Earlier when there used to be less of televisions or no computers/smart phones, reading was the primary leisure activity.
With the changing times and development of technology, children prefer to play video games or chat on the Internet with their friends. Though there is Kindle available which can be downloaded on your smart phone, tablet or computer and one can order/purchase books online.
People have somehow lost their passion for reading. As reading offers a productive approach to improve vocabulary and word power, students should be encouraged to pick the hobby and habit of reading in their leisure time.
There are various advantages associated with reading that show how important picking up the hobby of leisure reading is for students. A few of them are:
- Higher IQ Level: The teenagers who have a habit of leisure reading have comparatively higher IQs. They have a tendency to perform much better in academics and are also very creative. It is advised to introduce the habit of reading in children because it is observed that those kids will have better communication skills.
- Exercise for the Brain: Reading is to mind what exercise is to body and this wonderful habit assists in mental development. Reading also is known to stimulate eye muscles. It also helps improve the concentration of the reader. This hobby adds to the individual’s conversational skills while increasing the knowledge on a consistent basis.
- Vocabulary: Reading is a way to improve your grammatical skills as well as vocabulary. Students, when have to writing questions in their exams, perform well if they are into the habit of reading since these exams also test the vocabulary of the student.
- Experience: Besides adding to general knowledge, the readers are exposed to different subjects, stories, cultures, people and their ideology. Reading broadens the horizons of students making them think well personally as well as professionally. Reading different books help the students explore different things.
- Relaxation: Reading a good book can divert a student’s mind from his/her everyday text books and can also help him relax and calm down.
- Inexpensive Habit: This leisure activity is a safe and healthy form of enjoying your free time. Unlike other hobbies like playing video games, watching movies or even listening to songs, the hobby of reading is very inexpensive.
