The Scientist’s Stage

Ms.Abhismita Roy
Asst.Prof.
Department of Botany

Like an actor about to step on stage,
the nerves begin to flutter.
When the final words are spoken,
complexity finds its rhythm,
each line crafted in the conservatory of objective knowledge.
Here we are, quietly perfecting our craft behind the scenes.
Science is human effort,
a mix of brilliance and bias.
Which story will we tell? The one for fame,
or the quieter truth that strengthens knowledge?
An original claim, or a step forward?
We assume, we model,
where subject meets object,
truth becomes relative, and claims, uncertain.
The script takes shape as we rehearse,
the thrill of discovery urging us to share.
The abstract teases, the data lights up the scene.
Are we not artists, as much as storytellers?
Each side hides from the other,
hesitant to reveal, unwilling to confess,
pretending this is all serious business,
leaving no room for play.

Though often hesitant to admit, scientists are storytellers too. Through our work, we share the story of new discoveries, each one advancing human knowledge. Like a good storyteller, we shape our thoughts and hope to captivate our audience. My poem follows the process from idea to presentation, with all the subjective choices along the way. Among fellow scientists, we craft our work and share it, excited to add to the larger story of science.
