TRADITION AND MODERNITY

By Dr. A. VIJAYANAND (Arts & Humanities)

Tradition and modernity are two opposing concepts that have shaped human society throughout
history. Tradition refers to the beliefs, customs, and practices that have been passed down from
one generation to the next, often spanning centuries or even millennia. Modernity, on the other
hand, refers to the innovations, changes, and advancements in technology, science, and culture that
are unique to our current era.
Tradition is often associated with the preservation of cultural heritage, the stability of social norms,
and the maintenance of strong relationships within communities. It is seen as a source of comfort
and familiarity, providing a sense of belonging and continuity for individuals and societies. It is
also a source of pride, as it represents the rich cultural heritage of society and serves as a reminder
of its history and identity.
Modernity, on the other hand, is often associated with change and progress. It brings new
technologies, ideas, and ways of life, often challenging traditional beliefs and practices. Modernity
has allowed for tremendous advances in science and medicine, as well as greater economic
prosperity and improved quality of life for many people. However, it can also lead to the erosion
of traditional cultures, as new technologies and ways of life displace traditional practices and
beliefs.
The relationship between tradition and modernity is not always a straightforward one. On the one
hand, tradition can be seen as a barrier to progress and modernization, as it may resist change and
hold back progress. On the other hand, modernity can be seen as a threat to tradition, as it can
erode the cultural heritage of society and disrupt its social norms and relationships.
In conclusion, tradition and modernity are two opposing concepts that have shaped human society
throughout history. While tradition provides stability, comfort, and cultural heritage, modernity
brings change, progress, and innovation. It is important to balance the benefits of both tradition
and modernity, preserving cultural heritage and preserving social norms while embracing progress
and innovation. Ultimately, the relationship between tradition and modernity is a delicate one, and
it is up to individuals and societies to find the right balance between the two”
