FMRI for Brain Tumor Detection

Brain tumor is basically a group of cell that is grown inside or around the brain. They have the capability to destroy healthy cells directly or indirectly.                                                            Brain Tumor basically is of two types:

1. Primary
2. Metastatic

Primary tumor basically begins with tumor itself it can be treated easily as compared to metastatic. Whereas Metastatic tumor is formed due to cancer cells, that are located anywhere in the body and then it breaks away to the brain.

Diagnosis:

Previously and still now conventional methods to detect brain tumor are used like X-ray and MRI but when changes occurs in the cell metabolism and tissue physiology which proceeds to the changes like morphological then the above mentioned changes are not detected by conventional method. So here comes the use FMRI Scan.

FMRI Scan:

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging is very powerful mechanism in the study of functioning of brain, which can be used by Psychologists, Psychiatrists and neurologists. FMRI is basically based on phenomenon of Oxygenation-level-Dependent (BOLD) effect; it detects the changes in blood flow to access brain function. FMRI is used to measure small-small changes in the flow of blood that occur with activity of brain. Glucose is the primary source of energy for brain but it is never ever found or stored in the brain. So when different brain parts need energy to do some sort of activity, great amount of blood flows to the active areas for the transportation of glucose and thus allowing more oxygen rich blood to enter our brain. Therefore FMRI scan patients are asked to do specific task like speaking to increase oxygen rich blood flow to preferred part of the brain.

PROS:

FMRI scans are of very high resolution and it is basically non-invasive procedure that helps doctor to map the brain before surgery in turn this scan helps them with the information about the makeup of individuals brain to prevent critical injuries or to decide whether surgery is possible or not.
