Green Concrete

Green concrete is the concrete which is made up of concrete waste, eco-friendly, in which less energy is required in production. In the green concrete production less carbon dioxide produced as compared to ordinary concrete.

Most people used to think that green colour concrete is called green concrete, but here green concrete indicates environmental sustainability and eco-friendly.

Now it comes to why we use green concrete- The main ingredient of concrete is cement and cement is made from lime stone. At the time of manufacturing of cement its ingredients are heated from 8oo0C – 10000C then high amount of co2 produces. It means in 1kg of cement on around 900gm of co2 produced, but in the case of green concrete the emission of co2 reduces up to 30%, save the energy and it is eco-friendly as compared to conventional concrete. So these all are the reason for recommendation of uses of green concrete.

Now let’s see what materials are needed to make it- following are the ingredients from which it is prepared

  1. Fly ash
  2. GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag)
  3. Recycled demolition waste aggregate.
  4. Recycled concrete aggregate.
  5. Glass aggregate
  6. Manufactured sand
  7. Risk Husk Ash
  8. BFS (Blast Furnace Slag)
  9. Silica flume
  10. Metkaolin

If we talk about its uses then it is used in building construction as well as bridge, dam and road construction.

Now let’s talk about advantages and disadvantages of green concrete-

Advantages-

  1. The compressive strength and flexural strength of green concrete is same as conventional concrete.
  2. It decrees the effect of creep and shrinkage in concrete.
  3. It reduces the overall consumption of cement.
  4. The requirement of repair and maintenance of green concrete is low.
  5. Due to light weight of green concrete it reduces the dead load of the structure.
  6. The workability of green concrete is very well as compared to conventional concrete.
  7. The thermal and fire properties of green concrete is good.
  8. The problem of disposal of industrial wastage is also solved because these are used in manufacturing of green concrete.
  9. It is very economical and eco-friendly as compared to conventional concrete.

Disadvantages-

  1. Tensile strength of green concrete is very low as compared to conventional concrete.
  2. The cost of steel is increase because uses of stainless steel in green concrete.
  3. Water absorption of green concrete is very high as compared to conventional concrete.
  4. The life span of structure made by green concrete is very low as compared to life span of other structure made by conventional concrete.

Along with its advantages, there are also some disadvantages of “Green Concrete”.
