Editors direct the policy of the publication, manage the staff and coordinate all the work. Editors are responsible for the content of their publication. They decide what will appeal to readers, assign topics and oversee the production of the newspaper. In very large newspapers there are associate or assistant editors who have responsibility for particular subjects, such as sports, international news, education, careers, family, etc. Administrative duties of editors include hiring writers, planning budgets, negotiating contracts with freelance writers, etc.

An entry-level editor gets an average salary of approx Rs. 2.3 lakhs p.a. An editor who is at a mid-career level gets an average salary of approx. Rs. 4 lakhs p.a while an editor who is more experienced can expect approx. Rs. 6-7 lakhs p.a. The salary figures may vary from individual to individual and company to company. The salaries may also vary based on experience, skills, roles, location, etc.
