Purslane a wonder plant source of vitamins and medicinal qualities.

Chhattisgarh’s diverse geography and climate serve as a reservoir for excellent indigenous medical practises. One of the many wild herbs used by the tribal people as a source of food and medicine is Portulaca oleracea (dal bhaji/gol bhaji). It is the type of weeds, common name is Purslane.

P. oleracea has high levels of fatty acids, flavanoids, alkaloids, terpenes, vitamins, and minerals. It is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are often only found in the oil and fat of fish and not in plants.so we can say P.oleracea is the greatest and best source of omega-3 fatty acid for vegetarian person.

Polysaccharides contained in portulaca have therapeutic effects in the treatment of diabetes mellitus because they modulate blood lipids, metabolism, and blood glucose levels. This plant also contains significant amounts of vitamin A, a natural antioxidant that is essential for maintaining healthy mucous membranes, preventing lung and oral cavity malignancies, and supporting vision. Additionally, it includes the B-complex vitamins niacin, pyridoxine, and riboflavin as well as -tocopherol and ascorbic acid.

It demonstrates a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, such as antibacterial, antiulcerogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing qualities. Its usage to treat burns, headaches, disorders of the stomach, bowel, and liver, as well as cough, breathing problems, and arthritis, demonstrates its medicinal usefulness. Its importance in herbal medicine stems from its uses as a purgative, heart tonic, emollient, muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic medication.

Osteoporosis and psoriasis have both been treated with portulaca. It is an annual plant that can withstand salt and drought. Portulaca also contains melatonin, which may help explain its high nutritional value and antioxidant effects. Despite being an abundant source of food and medicine, it is one of the most underutilised herbs and merits preservation and more study.

One would not hesitate to draw the conclusion that Portulaca oleracea is indeed a wonder plant after considering its lavish array of uses. If properly utilised, it will in fact be the life-saving plant of the twenty-first century. Researchers in pharmacognosy and conventional medicine should pay greater attention to this plant’s nature and benefits in order to reduce human incapacity.
