DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Research Activities

Following are the thrust areas in which faculty of Civil engineering is more focused:

  1. Geo-Technical Engineering
  2. Foundation Engineering
  3. Pavements
  4. Construction Engineering & Management

1.Geo-Technical Engineering:

Development of Strength Charecteristics of Properties of Soil: Correlation Equation of Soil properties like CBR,SBC can be determined from index properties, compaction charecteristis of Soils.

Research Plan:

In  countries like India, the major  problem to construct a complete network of road system is scarcity of money to construct road by conventional methods. Hence efforts are to be made to explore usage of local materials and soils can be used as improved subgrade. Flexible pavements are generally preferred to rigid pavements due to lesser initial cost and easy maintenance. Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) are widely used parameter in design and construction stages of flexible pavements for characterization of sub-grade and sub base materials. Also, modulus of subgrade reaction required for design of rigid pavements can be deduced from CBR value.

2.Foundation Engineering

Applications of Laterally loaded piles in Expansive soils: The structures which carry lateral loads due to earth pressure, wind, earthquakes, wave action and ship impact. The exact predictions of the load–displacement response of the  group of piles as well as the straining actions are required  for a safe and economic design.

Research Plan:

Research focuses on the apllications of  laterally loaded single piles though piles are most frequently used in pile groups. Expansive soil is modeled as an elastic-perfectly plastic model using the  constitutive model of Mohr–Coulomb theory.

Analysis and study can be made by procuring Plaxis software. This project can be resource proposal for AICTE, CSIR and UGC are the main organization for funding the research proposals. Research work can also be carried out under the collaboration with CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Institute, Chennai.

3.Pavements (Evaluation of Floors):

Among different construction activities, concrete pavement advances is  an imperative part to modern floors for  industries. Guarantee protection, durability , reliability and safety are equired for this type of structures. Specifically, the evenness and the levelness are exceptional prerequisites that expect a genuine centrality regard to efficiencies of working, particularly whenever  the Road needs good strength. The properties of geometric design  can be characterized in various ways, yet for each situation they are alluded to pavement surface, that must be even and horizontal. Limits of acceptance are explained by standard specializations, in different nations, together with the reasonable techniques for estimations and controls. By and large, in any case, strategies pf this kind are not accepted  by any stretch of the imagination plausible. On other side an objective esteems are not achieved, it is important to give some alternate solutions by the contactors, if this is required by the agreement. There are two principle conceivable techniques

  1. grinding of surface
  2. overtopping with self-leveling and high protection saps.

Research Plan:

To carry out this research Contact Profilometers need to be procured and Analytical study can be made by procuring STAAD Pro. Software.  AICTE, CSIR and  UGC are the main organizations for funding the research proposals. Research  work can also be carried out under the collaboration of NGRI, Geological Survey of India and CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Institute, Chennai..

  1. Construction Engineering & Management

Application of Last Planner System for developing the Construction Process

The aim of this research is to develop the construction planning practice and enhance site management by adopting the Last Planner System (LPS). LPS was adopted in a residential building construction project through an action research process.

Research Plan:

Last Planner System  has been used in the field and refined during the most recent 10 years, with many advantages in different conditions around the world. This study gives a valuable contribution towards the continuous development strategy for construction industry, stakeholders etc. It is a very challenging task to research in the area of Construction Engineering and Building management. Only few Construction management specialists are working in this area direction but they are at initial stages. In the current proposal, I am going to implement LPS in other sites. Under this project all sites should be studied thoroughly to get better results in short interval of time.
