SAT

The SAT – Scholastic Assessment Test is widely used for college admissions in the United States and Canada.

The College Board developed it and first introduced it in 1926. Over the years, the SAT exam has evolved to assess a student’s college readiness and potential for higher education success.

The SAT exam is designed to measure a student’s readiness for college and provide them with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. The primary purpose of the SAT is to provide colleges and universities with a standardised measure of a student’s academic abilities and potential.

By evaluating a student’s performance on the SAT, colleges can compare applicants from different schools and regions fairly, as grading standards can vary across educational institutions.

SAT Exam Module

The sections are as follows:

  • Reading: The Reading section tests students’ ability to read and comprehend passages from various sources. The passages on the SAT are drawn from multiple genres, including fiction, nonfiction, and history. The questions in the Reading section ask students to identify the main ideas, understand the author’s purpose, make inferences, and interpret figurative language.
  • Writing and Language: This section tests students’ ability to write clear, compelling prose. The questions in the Writing and Language section ask students to identify and correct grammar, usage, and punctuation errors and improve the clarity and effectiveness of writing.
  • Maths: The Math section tests students’ knowledge of maths concepts and their ability to solve maths problems. The maths problems on the SAT exam cover various topics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and probability.

The essay, or the SAT Essay, is a separate section that tests a student’s ability to analyse and respond to a prompt. Not all colleges require this essay, so it’s considered optional.

Time Duration

The total time of the SAT test is 3 hours, and with the optional essay, it’s 3 hours and 50 minutes.

SAT Score and Validity

The SAT exam is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600. The Reading, Writing, and Language sections are scored on a scale of 200 to 800, and the Math section is scored on a scale of 200 to 800.

SAT is technically valid forever, meaning it has no expiry date. However, many universities only accept scores up to five years or older.

If you are considering applying to college in the United States or Canada, the SAT is a test you should consider taking. The SAT can help you demonstrate your readiness for college and increase your chances of admission to your dream school.
