TOEFL

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is a popular test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who wish to enrol in English-speaking universities. The TOEFL exam score is crucial in the application process for candidates studying abroad in an English-speaking setting.

It is commonly used as an admission requirement by universities and colleges in English-speaking countries and various institutions and agencies for visa and certification purposes. Accepted by more than 11,000 universities and institutions worldwide, including those in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the United States, and throughout Europe and Asia.

The TOEFL exam iBT is the most common version of the TOEFL exam. It is a computer-based test that measures all four English language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

TOEFL Exam Format

The TOEFL test is available in two formats.

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test): This is the most common format, and it is conducted online. It is widely available in most countries and comprises all four language skills.
  2. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test): This format is less standard and only available in locations where internet-based testing is impossible. The PBT assesses listening, structure, and reading skills but does not include the speaking section.

TOEFL Exam Module

  • Reading: The reading section tests your ability to understand and interpret academic English texts. You will be asked to read a variety of texts, such as essays, articles, and passages from textbooks.
  • Listening: The listening section tests your ability to understand spoken English. You will be asked to listen to a variety of lectures, conversations, and discussions.
  • Speaking: The speaking section tests your ability to speak English fluently and effectively. You will be asked to give a short presentation and to answer questions in an interview-like format.
  • Writing: It tests your ability to write clear, concise, and well-organized English. You will be asked to write an essay and respond to a prompt.

TOEFL Exam Duration

The TOEFL iBT is 3 hours long and consists of 4 sections:

  • Reading: 60-80 questions in 60 minutes
  • Listening: 30-40 questions in 60 minutes
  • Speaking: 2 tasks in 20 minutes
  • Writing: 2 tasks in 50 minutes

Score and Validity

The TOEFL iBT score ranges from 0 to 120. A score of 80 or above is considered to be good.

The TOEFL exam score validity period is two years. It means that your TOEFL scores will be valid for two years after the date you take the test.

Most students who intend to pursue higher education overseas take the ETS TOEFL exam. Students taking the TOEFL test would also make them eligible for a number of scholarships and assist those searching for work abroad with the visa application process.
