SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)

Ms. Umang Sharma

Assistant Professor - Kalinga University, New Raipur

SEL is the crucial framework through which individuals of all ages develop the abilities to strive toward their own particular objectives, understand and manage their emotions, foster meaningful relationships, make reasoned decisions, and experience and demonstrate empathy. SEL is crucial to both human development and schooling. It is a process by which all children and adults learn and put to use the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes necessary to forge positive identities, control emotions, accomplish individual and group objectives, feel and act with empathy toward others, build and sustain supportive relationships, and make thoughtful decisions.

THE CASEL 5

The CASEL 5 or SEL framework tackles five fundamental social and emotional skills that are closely related to one another, promoting learning and growth which are :

  • SELF-AWARENESS: The foundation of social-emotional learning is maintaining a level of self-awareness, which enables students to acquire a deeper comprehension of how constructive activities result in an enhanced self-image.
  • SELF-MANAGEMENT: Children and young people learn the value of self-management as their social-emotional abilities develop, particularly in relation to intrinsic motivation, emotional control, and setting personal objectives.
  • SOCIAL AWARENESS: Social-emotional learning promotes social awareness on both a personal level with regard to interpersonal interactions and on a larger scale with regard to other viewpoints. It centres on the golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated.
  • RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: By emphasizing conflict resolution techniques and the importance of being sensitive to the needs of others, SEL skills equip students with the ability to form connections.
  • RESPONSIBLE DECISION MAKING: Students are taught how to make wise decisions that will promote growth and progress in all spheres of their lives, including their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual ones.

NEED OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING:

Students can learn about themselves and others in a supportive school environment thanks to the social and emotional development that it offers. SEL abilities can aid students in pursuing higher education, realising job objectives, and fostering stronger bonds with family and friends. Socialemotional learning offers an educational strategy that values students’ autonomy and gives students from all backgrounds the chance to form positive habits, enabling them to develop into happy, content adults. This is accomplished by placing a central focus on students’ happiness and wellbeing.

BENEFITS OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING:

Social and emotional learning is proven to be beneficial in many facets of life :

SCHOOLS

By educating children about emotional intelligence and ethical decision-making, social and emotional learning empowers students and fosters a more peaceful and effective learning environment. Students who are happy and healthy perform academically significantly better and are much less likely to need intervention or disciplinary action.

FAMILY SEL

promotes a mutually beneficial relationship based on social and emotional awareness between parents and their children. SEL can therefore offer a priceless and solid basis for achieving success in other spheres of life.

COMMUNITY

Learning about other people’s various backgrounds and opinions is crucial to social and emotional development. Positive Action’s SEL strategy is focused on treating others as you would like to be treated and supports more social connections between people for a more harmonious and positive community rather than dividing communities by difference.

The social and emotional growth that SEL provides, allows students to learn about themselves and others in a safe educational setting. Students with good SEL skills are more likely to pursue higher education, achieve their career goals, and have closer relationships with their family and friends. Social-emotional learning is a teaching method that respects students’ autonomy and gives learners of all backgrounds the chance to build healthy routines that will help them grow into joyful, fulfilled people. By giving students’ pleasure and wellness a key focus, this is accomplished.
